Hiking in the Berkshires

recently coming back from a camping trip in the Berkshire mountains in MA, I am sore and worn out from the many hiking, climbing, and swimming journeys that my buddies and I went on.  These mountains have, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful natural features I have ever seen.  No wonder everybody on the trip was always urging to reach our next journey.  From the peaks of the mountains, to the wilderness trails, to the lakes and waterfalls, there is freedom and adventure to be discovered around every corner.

The first area that we traveled to was an area called Tannery Falls, where there were hiking trails along a few scenic streams and waterfalls.  When we got to the first and tallest waterfall, my friends and I took a quick break by walking waist deep in the cold pool of water at the bottom of the falls.  Not five minutes went by before my friends and I were all climbing up the waterfall, taking breaks in the small pools on the way up to the pool at the top, called “The Oasis.”  Once we reached the the top of the waterfall, we spent hours there eating, swimming, throwing rocks into the pools below and occasionally striking a pose for photos snapped by tourists on the actual trail.

Our second journey was a lake kind of close to our campsite in Savoy.  It [certainlydefinitely] wasn’t the largest lake that I have ever seen, but it was so peaceful and inviting that I couldn’t help but swim more.  Toward the middle of the lake, there is a rock shaped like a seat that raises out of the lake about a foot.  As we all discovered, seats three with ease.  This rock is where we saw the sunset of camping day number two, and let me tell you, it was one to remember.

On the third day, our last adventure destination was a place named the Windsor Jambs.  The Windsor Jambs can be defined as a lengthy stretch of stream, lined with overhangs and enormous boulders that are perfect for climbing. We walked down the hiking trail over to the bottom of the Jambs and got pumped up for our adventure back up through the cliffs and waterfalls.  On several occasions I had to resort to my Nikon 10×50 binoculars to view which things lay ahead, and correctly plan a route to safely get around them.  As well as being insanely entertaining, the Jambs are sort of dangerous, but extremely stunning.

After our three day camping trip filled with fun days and wacky nights, I can absolutely state that I wish I could have stayed longer.  I highly advise you to experience the Berkshires in MA the first opportunity you get.  Take your family for a camping trip, or just take a couple days for you to simply sit back and lose yourself in the outdoors.  Whatever adventures or relaxations you choose to participate in, I promise you will be amazed by the beauty and freedom of these mountains.
